Ocean Alliance, a company that aims to increase public awareness of whale and ocean health through research and public education, recently opened its new headquarters in Gloucester.

The company's new home is located at the former Tarr and Wonson Paint Manufactory, on the tip of Gloucester's Rocky Neck. The site also includes, a cutting-edge green chemistry lab, a robotics lab, a community center, a marine mammal and ocean resource library and a situation room that will feature live video feeds from marine research projects across the world.

Iain Kerr, CEO of Ocean Alliance, said in a statement that the company's "oceanographic research and education center will support new generations of New England and Gloucester men and women who rely on the sea for sustenance."

According to a recent announcement from Mayor Carolyn Kirk's office, the company has invested more than $3.25 million in the restoration of the old paint factory, which it purchased with the help of a grant from the Annenberg Foundation.

Kirk represented the city at a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday commemorating the opening of Ocean Alliance’s first restored building.

“The city is proud to celebrate the restoration of this historic site,” Kirk said in a recent statement. “Ocean Alliance’s new headquarters will advance the community’s vision for a diversified working waterfront.”

Ocean Alliance works with scientific partners to collect a broad spectrum of data on whales and ocean life. Ocean Alliance uses this data to advise educators, policy makers, and the general public on wise stewardship of the oceans to mitigate pollution, prevent the collapse of marine mammal populations, and promote ocean and human health.
