A man was arrested in Hingham Sunday evening and charged with a fifth drunk-driving offense, police said.

According to police, Stephen Vannewkrik, 49, from Mansfield, was driving 49 mph in a 30-mph zone on Cushing Street at 5:45 p.m., swerving from the shoulder of the road to the other side of the lane.

Police stopped Vannewkrik on Cushing Street. According to police, Vannewkrik’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy and his speech was slurred. When asked to complete a field sobriety test, Vannewkrik could not walk unless holding on to the car door.

Vannewkrik was arrested for his fifth operating under the influence offense. Previously, he was arrested in 1979 in Avon, in 1981 in Canton, in 1984 in Randolph, and in 1997 in Manchester by the Sea, police said.

His vehicle was confiscated as a part of Melanie’s Law.

He was arraigned at Hingham District Court Monday, and is being held at the Plymouth House of Corrections pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday at Hingham District Court.
