Police seek help in finding suspect in Hingham bank robbery

Hingham Police believe they have identified the man who was involved in the bank robbery of the Hingham Institution for Savings Bank last Saturday.

According to Hingham police, this morning police obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect.

Subsequently, Hingham police detectives, members of the Bank Robbery Task Force – made up of State Police, Boston police, and the FBI, with assistance from the Boston Police SWAT team, executed a search warrant at the suspect’s South Boston home, but did not find him.

Police are seeking the public’s help in locating the man, who was identified as James T. Callahan, 58, of 13 Rogers St. in South Boston.

He is a white male, 5’9”, approximately 170 pounds with brown eyes and mostly gray hair. He may walk with a limp.

The suspect was identified with the help of the public, who saw media coverage of the surveillance photos, police said.

The man is considered armed and dangerous, as he wielded a black handgun tucked into his front waistband before telling the bank teller to fill a backpack with $100 and $50 bills.

There is no known vehicle description, as the suspect walked away from the bank until he was out of sight.

Callahan has been convicted of a previous armed bank robbery, Hingham police said.

This most current arrest warrant is for armed robbery while masked, assault with a dangerous weapon, and larceny over $250.
