Hingham will participate in Earth Hour on March 31 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. by turning off any municipal lights that don’t affect public safety.

The town also has asked the Energy Action Committee to contact area businesses about the possibility of turning off their lights.

The initiative, led by Pam Harty, chairwoman of the Energy Action Committee, is part of a nationwide effort to extinguish all non-essential lighting during one hour on the last Saturday of March to demonstrate concern about the effect of energy use on climate change.

“Participating in Earth Hour symbolizes that by working together each of us can make a positive impact and can protect the health of the planet for future generations,” said a proclamation from the committee that will be read during Earth Hour.
