Derby Street Shoppes gets involved in Boston Magazine 2012 Design Home

Fifteen minutes away from Hingham's Derby Street Shoppes, the Boston Magazine Design Home in Cowings Cove, Norwell, looks like it came from a magazine.

And with kitchenware from Wiliams-Sonoma, furniture from Company C, exercise equipment from Lululemon, and accessories and clothes from Whole Foods Market, Barnes & Noble, AZ Studio, Hanna Andersson, LOFT, London Harness Company, and Luluabelle, it’s no wonder it does.

The event, which opened Thursday, is a fund-raiser benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern New England. Visitors can glimpse into the home for $25 a ticket and see local design concepts and cutting-edge home technology from a variety of organizations.

While the event mainly focuses on building technology and design, for the Derby Street sponsor, the event in intended to usher visitors down to Derby Street and showcase what many of the stores have to offer.

“We came on board and sponsored the event because we wanted to encourage customers and visitors to shop at Derby Street, because it’s close by,” said Niamh O’Maille, marketing coordinator at Derby Street Shoppes. “We also have this opportunity for our merchants to come on board. Ten of our stores are helping out…and they have helped finish it off to help make it feel lived in.”

Visitors will also receive a gift bag from the event with discount cards, directions, and a map to Derby Street to continue their day.

According to O’Maille, this is the first year Derby Street has participated in the Design Home, which moves from town to town in Massachusetts for each event. The last Design Home was constructed in 2008.

“We’re proud to sponsor the Design Home as it’s such a wonderful opportunity for people to visit the South Shore, visit this beautiful home, and see how much the South Shore has to offer,” O’Maille said. “We’re also happy that ticket sales will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities.”

In fact, all proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern New England.

In its sixth year, the Design Home is built from the ground up, with Boston Magazine choosing a designer to build the home, and bringing on businesses to outfit the home.

This year’s builder, Eugene Mattie Associates, has created a massive, multistory space complete with two decks and walk-out basement.

“The builder has a sense of what the structure will look like…and Boston Magazine, we work with a number of our business partners, whether it’s a window company, door company, tile, flooring, everything that goes into a house we work to bring our partners into this home,” said Rice Wales, marketing director for Boston Magazine. “It’s a partnership between the builder and Boston Magazine.”

Although it is too early to tell how many people may walk through this home, in the past the event has brought a couple thousand people through the space, Wales said.

Tickets for the property are on sale from Oct. 4 through Nov. 12 and can be purchased either at the door or online.

Boston Magazine has also scheduled a number of speaker seminars featuring companies featured in the design house.
