The Hingham Shipyard will welcome in Trader Joe’s to a 12,000-square-foot store, the retailer announced this week.
The store will be located in a new building between the Vitamin Shop, Talbots, and the CVS building in what is currently a parking lot, and will feature the tropical Trader Joe’s elements known at the chain's stores.
The announcement follows months of rumors that a big box retailer was coming to the Shipyard.
“That’s what we had been permitting for over the last few months,” Leslie Cohen, vice president of development for Samuels & Associates, said of Trader Joe's.
According to Cohen, the grocer will open up later this year, and construction should begin in March, with a frontage on Route 3A.
The brand, which is known for carrying an assortment of unique and ever-changing items, will be a welcome addition to the Shipyard, Cohen said.
“We obviously have been in touch with our tenants in the Shipyard and everyone is really excited,” Cohen said. “Trader Joe’s is a great tenant and adds to the offering of mixed uses…and brings a customer that isn’t coming to the shipyard today because there aren’t many Trader Joe’s approximate to the Shipyard area.”
Other recent additions to the Shipyard include Union Fish and Stone Hearth Pizza, both of which are under construction and are scheduled to open this spring.
The store will also join the new 26-unit residential building at the Shipyard, completed in October.
According to Cohen, the developer is planning on two more residential buildings, to be constructed in phases.
“We have two other buildings, the next building will go where the playground was…the third will go where the mini-golf course was built," Cohen said. "It’s a phased approach, were in the planning for the middle building. I expect probably later this year we’ll be under way on the next building.”
Trader Joe’s will accompany The Fresh Market, the development's other grocery store.
