Hingham Police arrested Stephen J. Conte, 20, from Hingham, for alleged OUI, drug possession

Hingham Police will charge a 20-year-old Hingham man with drug charges after officers allegedly found marijuana in his car while arresting him for drunk driving.

According to police, an officer was on patrol on March 9 at around 8:42 p.m., driving east on High Street. When the officer got near Cross Street, he saw a vehicle coming in the opposite direction start to swerve off the right side of the road and hit a snow bank.

The car, a 2004 Jeep Cherokee, then drove back onto the road and continued west on High Street.

The officer put his lights on and turned around to find the car but soon lost sight of him. Police said the officer then began backtracking on High Street when he again saw the Jeep traveling toward him at a high rate of speed.

Police said the Jeep still had snow stuck in the fender from striking the snow bank.

The officer again put on his lights and pulled around to follow the car, chasing the Jeep as it made a left onto Ward Street, going 60 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone, police said.

The Jeep then stopped on Ward Street near the intersection of Cushing Street.

The officer approached the suspect and asked why he didn’t pull over, however police said the suspect was confused and gave evasive answers. Police said the suspect smelled strongly of alcohol and his eyes were red and glassy.

Though asked twice if the suspect had been drinking, the driver ignored the officer and did not answer. The road was too narrow and slippery for a field sobriety test on scene, police said.

The suspect refused to do a field sobriety test at the station.

The suspect was placed under arrest. Soon after taking the man into custody, police saw what appeared to be more than an ounce of raw marijuana spilled on the driver seat floor.

The marijuana was beside an opened metal whiskey container tin that also had raw marijuana inside it.

Police additionally found an empty bottle of whiskey on the drivers flood, and in a backpack in the back seat found two digital scales, a grinder, a pipe, two plastic jars containing approximately 5.7 ounces of marijuana, four Oxycodone pills, a large empty freezer bag, and $3,500 in cash.

Stephen J. Conte, 20, from Hingham was placed under arrest and charged with OUI Alcohol, failure to stop for a police officer, possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute, possession of a Class D substance, possession of a Class B substance, speeding, and a marked lanes violation.

Police said the suspect was not charged with being a minor in possession of alcohol because the bottle of whiskey on the front seat floor was empty.

Police seized the cash as proceeds from drug sales, pending forfeiture through the District Attorney’s Office.

Conte was released the same evening on personal recognizance by the Clerk Magistrate. He will be arraigned on March 11 at Hingham District Court.
