Trader Joe’s, the newest big retailer for the Hingham Shipyard, is scheduled to open Oct. 4, nearly a month sooner than expected.
Construction on the store has been ongoing since mid-March, when work started to transform the parking area beside CVS into the customized building.
Nearly a week away from the projected opening, Hingham officials are excited.
“This really is a great success story for the shipyard and for the officials that had the foresight for the approval of it, and for the townspeople, and economic development, it’s a great thing,” said Mary Savage-Dunham, Hingham’s town planner.
The 12,000-square-foot, single-story space, situated along Route 3A, will feature historic photos hanging on the side of the building. A historic eagle statute taken from an old shipyard building will be placed on the clock tower.
As for the interior, customers can expect to see some surprises.
“It’s going towards more of a style that Trader Joe’s wants, but at the same time it is meeting the architectural theme that was developed for the projects that the town was very much involved in,” said Michael Fitzpatrick, vice president of development with shipyard developer Samuels and Associates.
According to Fitzpatrick, the build-out is wrapping up sooner than anticipated, with construction accelerated to get the store open sooner.
The Trader Joe's opening is significant for the developer, as it completes construction of the shipyard's retail and commercial components.
“It's extremely exciting,” Fitzpatrick said. “We were looking at the overall redevelopment of the project and areas we could improve part of that was underutilized areas, and this presented the perfect opportunity.”
As for the remaining commercial spaces in the Shipyard, 80 percent is currently leased out or occupied.
The residential side is still catching up, with construction slated to start on the second phase this winter or next spring. Two additional residential buildings are expected to be constructed within the next several years.
