Mayor Thomas M. Menino handed out caps commemorating the New England Patriots’ AFC Championship at the Roosevelt K-8 School on Friday.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino made a surprise visit to a Hyde Park school today as part of the run-up to Sunday’s Super Bowl pitting the hometown favorite New England Patriots against rival New York Giants.

Menino startled students at the Roosevelt K-8 School in Hyde Park during a Super Bowl party for students recognized through the school’s “Complement Program” for demonstrating good character. The program rewards students at the school who set positive examples for their peers through their own good behavior.

Menino passed out caps donated by Modell’s Sporting Goods that commemorate the Patriots’ AFC Championship. Each student received a hat to wear plus two more to share with friends or family, a move meant to reinforce the school’s message for students to be good community members.
