Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley recently visited a Hyde Park charter school to speak with girls about working to overcome gender bias.

Pressley visited the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School on Nov. 29 to address sixth-grade girls in the First Ladies Mentoring Program with a message of persistence and grace, according to a statement from the school. After speaking, Pressley answered questions from the children.

The First Ladies of Renaissance are one subset of the school’s much-admired choir, the Voices of Renaissance. Founded in 1997 by choirmaster Evelyn Lee Jones, the full choir includes 170 girls and boys ages 7 – 12.

The school previously presented Pressley with a Living Legend Award at its annual Black History Month celebration shortly after her 2009 election to the City Council. Pressley is the first African-American woman to serve on the council since its installation in 1909.
