Bike lanes coming to sections of three major roads in JP
Bike lanes will be installed before winter on South Huntington Avenue, from the Centre Street to Huntington Avenue about one mile away, and along sections of the Centre-South Street corridor.
"These projects will bring the total number of existing bike lane mileage in the City of Boston to seventeen," Mayor Thomas M. Menino said in a statement. "I am pleased with the progress that we are making toward ensuring that city streets are equipped to accommodate bicycles as well as cars."
On Centre Street, the bike lanes will run about one mile from Perkins Street to Eliot Street. On South Street, the lanes will run about one half mile from Centre to Arborway.
The roads will remain open while work is done daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to apply thermoplastic and paint to the pavement and install new signs to indicate the bike lanes’ presence, according to a city press release. Drivers are advised to watch for posted signs as temporary parking restrictions may be necessary.
The project, which is already about half done, will be completed before winter and the projected cost around is $30,000, according to city transportation spokesman James Mansfield.
“Bicycle accommodations along Jamaica Plain's main spine will support the increasing number of bicyclists in the neighborhood,” the release said, adding the South Huntington Avenue is a popular route for cyclists and the lanes will improve safety for everyone using the roadway and sidewalks.
“At this particular location, the installation of a bike lane will have the added benefit of allowing cyclists and drivers to better navigate the MBTA tracks,” it said.
