A popular bookstore in Jamaica Plain, known for its diverse collection of literature and performances, will be shutting its doors for good in the coming weeks, the owners announced today.

Jamaicaway Books and Café owners Rosalyn Elder and Brian Sandiford announced in an e-mail to customers their plan to close the bookstore “in order to spend more time with our family.”

The e-mail did not specify a date, but announced an everything-must-go sale for Saturday at the store, located at 676 Centre St. in Jamaica Plain.

In addition to its collection of books, the store, which opened in Dec. 1998, has hosted a number of musical and dance performances over the years, according to the email. Also, at one time it offered Spanish immersion storytime for toddlers.

Most recently, the store marketed a children’s coloring book that focused on African American heritage in Massachusetts, and served soul food in its café.

The owners were not immediately available for comment.
