An Arlington man has been arrested for allegedly breaking into a Jamaica Plain church, authorities said.

Joe Maloof, 31, also faces charges of heroin possession, Boston police said.

Officers went to the St. Thomas Aquinas Church on South Street at about 3 a.m. on Friday after someone called to report that a man had been seen entering the church through a basement window, officials said.

Officers saw a broken basement-level window, a shovel on the ground nearby and lights on inside the church, police said.

Officers found Maloof inside the church with help from a police dog named Nico.
