After nearly five years as principal of the Curley K-8 School in Jamaica Plain, Jeffrey Slater plans to step down this month to take another job in California.

Slater announced his plans to leave in a letter to parents that is also posted on the school’s website.

“Our talented and dedicated teachers, staff, community partners, parents/guardians, and students have worked hard to make the Curley the outstanding place it is today,” Slater wrote. “It has been a joy to serve with you in such a wonderful and fulfilling school setting, and I know every one of you has a bright future ahead.”

Slater said he will leave during April vacation, which is next week. Mirna Vega Wilson, a former principal at the school, plans to work as interim principal for the remainder of the academic year, officials said.

“During his years at the Curley, Jeff has gone above and beyond to create a safe, supportive climate that fosters learning and positive interaction between students, parents, and teachers,” said a statement from the school parent council’s co-chairs, Genevieve Day and Dave Demerjian. “He has made lasting contributions to the school, and he will be missed. We wish him well in his new job.”

“For those of you who do not know Mirna Vega Wilson, we feel very lucky to have her (out of retirement!) and back at our school as our interim principal to finish out the year,” the co-chairs’ statement added.

The school’s network assistant superintendent, Cheryl Watson-Harris, will soon reach out to the school community about the process to select a new principal, officials said. Her office is located at the Curley and she can be reached at 617-635-8239 or at cwatson@boston.k12.ma.us.

Slater’s plan to step down was reported previously by the Jamaica Plain Patch website.
