Proceeds from haircuts and blowouts at a Jamaica Plain salon today between 4 and 8 p.m. will benefit the Hyde Square Task Force nonprofit.
The fundraising event, “Hairblast: An Evening of Haircuts with a Social Mission,” will be held at Ultra Beauty Salon at 401 Centre St.
A haircut, blowout or both will be $50 during the event. All proceeds will go to the task force.
There will be light appetizers, drinks and music and a Mary Kay stylist will provide makeup consultation and beauty makeovers for guests.
For appointments, call 617-983-8407. Walk-ins are also welcome.
The salon is organizing the event along with the task force and with local business sponsors, including El Oriental de Cuba, Whole Foods Market, Centre Liquor and Aromi Caffe.
Damaris Pimentel, owner of the salon and a task force board member, came up with the idea.
“I’ve always felt it is important to be involved in the community,” said a statement from Pimentel, who opened her shop 31 years ago and joined the task force board 13 years ago.
She said the mission of the task force, which aims to empower youth and their families through various programming, is important to her.
“We have to look after the next generation,” she said. “When I hire new hair stylists I tell them upfront, I expect that you will do 20 hours of volunteer work a year. Initially the stylists don’t take my community service challenge seriously.”
But in the end, she said she finds the stylists enjoy volunteering and many go beyond the required hours.
“They get engaged and understand a different aspect of the community,” she said.
