Elected leaders and development officials will host a dual ribbon-cutting and ground-breaking ceremony next week to mark the completion of the first phase of a 14-building, $250,000 million redevelopment plan in Jackson Square.
The event at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29 will formally unveil a new building at 225 Centre St., which features 103 apartments and 16,000 square feet of retail, according to officials from development company The Community Builders, Inc.
Developers will then break ground on another project, Jackson Commons, a 39-apartment affordable housing development that will open on a new roadway at 75 Amory Ave.
Both projects are part of the Jackson Square Redevelopment Initiative, which is being constructed across about 11 acres of public and private land at a key crossroads between Jamaica Plain and Roxbury, steps from the Jackson Square MBTA station.
225 Centre St., which broke ground in May 2012, was the first and largest aspect of the massive redevelopment initiative conceived in a master plan residents and city officials crafted a decade ago to revitalize the area.
The square, where Columbus Avenue and Centre Street intersect, was among the areas that suffered decades ago after demolitions to make room for a planned extension of Interstate 95. After a public outcry, the addition was never built.
The redevelopment initiative is being led by three nonprofits that comprise Jackson Square Partners – the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation, Urban Edge, and the Hyde Square Task Force.
The plan calls for building properties with a mix of uses, including commercial, retail, rental and ownership housing, green space, indoor recreation and parking.
The various projects involve a mix of city, state, federal and private funding sources.
