Organizers raising money to help pay for a long-awaited multi-purpose playing field at the Curley K-8 School in Jamaica Plain say they need $85,000 over the next 50 days to reach their goal.

The capital campaign, which began about a year ago, aims to raise a total of $260,000 by March 1.

The campaign has collected $175,000 so far. And organizers said the next $10,000 collected will be doubled through a matching grant.

Six years ago, a schoolyard improvement effort at the Curley called for an expanded green space, new playground structures, a mural, and an outdoor classroom to be built in a first phase and a playing field in a second phase.

The first phase, supported by a grant from the Boston Schoolyard Initiative, was completed within about two years, but the field has not had enough funding.

To help fund the field project, organizers began a capital campaign last year. About two weeks after the effort began, the school received an anonymous $50,000 donation toward the project.

The new turf playing field, surrounded by a running track, would replace an aging, 14,000 square-foot asphalt lot. The proposed new green space would be used for physical education classes, school sports, informal play and after school programing.
