The Lexington Royals upset the Andover Warriors in overtime to win the boys' U-12 Division 1 championship of the North Andover Soccer Association's 28th annual Columbus Day weekend tournament.

Led by coaches Tim Carruthers, Tom Shiple, and Sherman Chan, the Royals began the tournament with a tight 1-0 win over Wilmington and a disappointing 2-5 loss to Andover.

However, they bounced back in their third game against Billerica, scoring 4 goals in the second half for a 7-2 cictory that secured a playoff berth.

After a tense 4-3 semifinal win over the home team North Andover Red Thunder, Lexington advanced to the final round to face Andover, who entered the championship match with no losses, having outscored their opponents 10-4 in four games.

The two teams battled through over 40 minutes of play with Andover leading 1-0. Royals’ striker Simon Carruthers tied the game on a penalty kick giving Lexington renewed energy.

With the match tied at 1-1 after 60 minutes of grueling competition, Lexington and Andover continued play in a tense tie-breaking overtime period.

With only minutes left in overtime, Lexington forward Hagop Kouchakdjian scored, securing the Royals’ triumph over Andover and the Division 1 championship victory.

Goalie Adrian Porras and center back Jesse Strod put in tremendous defensive performances against Essex County’s most talented offensive players.

Over 130 teams and 2,200 players and coaches competed in the 28th Annual Columbus Day Soccer Tournament sponsored by the North Andover Soccer Association, with games for boys and girls in U10-U14 age groups.
