A special community meeting to update residents on Estabrook Elementary’s ongoing PCBs contamination problems is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today in Cary Memorial Hall, 1605 Massachusetts Ave.

The topics will include reports from the school district’s consultants, Needham-based Environmental Health & Engineering Inc., on its assessment of the levels of PCBs in the school’s kindergarten and Grade 1 wing, and the likely risks involved, according to a posting on the town’s website, www.lexingtonma.gov.

In a letter dated Oct. 14, Superintendent Paul Ash nformed parents that the school’s kindergarten students may be forced to remain in modular classrooms for the rest of the school year unless the school district can reduce the level of polychlorinated biphenyls.

The school closed for more than a week in early September after tests found higher than expected levels of the potentially harmful PCBs, which were traced to old window caulking that had been removed from the building over the summer.
