Its short run in Lexington featured a visit from basketball star Shaquille O’Neal, but now Buca di Beppo has left town.

The Italian restaurant on Waltham Street in Lexington Center shut its doors for good on Monday, slightly more than a year after it opened for business in the town, said Mark Erhli, a vice president of operations for the Minneapolis, Minn.-based restaurant chain.

Erhli said the decision to close the Lexington location was based in part of customer “traffic,” but all employees from the location have been transferred to other Buca di Beppo locations in Massachusetts, including locations in Shrewsbury, Dedham and Seekonk, which will remain open.

Shortly after the Lexington location opened it made news in October 2010 when then Celtics star Shaquille O’Neal paid a visit to help the restaurant donate 2,500 pounds of pasta to the Greater Boston Food Bank.

Erhli said the Buca di Beppo remains committed to its other restaurants in New England.
