The following was submitted by Malden High publicity director Paul Famiglietti:
A season that started out full of hope and promises ended with disappointment as the Malden High boys' soccer team failed to reach the state tournament for the second straight year.
The team finished with a record of 7-10-1, but was much closer to making the tournament then the record shows. In the second to last game against Dracut, the score was tied with just 2 minutes to play. A tie would have made the final game of the year meaningful with the boys needing a win in the final game to qualify.
However that tie was not to be as Dracut scored to end Malden’s chances. Coach erry Smith used the final game of the season to give some playing time to some players and to work on some things for next year. That game ended in a 1-0 loss to Lynnfield.
There were some positives to come out of the 2009 season, including the play of seniors Sam Warton and Nelson Mendoza. Both players are sure to move on to play at the college level. Also the improved play of seniors Matt Rizzo in goal and Abdu El Aldouni in the midfield were crucial for Malden’s success.
The future looks bright for the 2010 season. Leading scorer and captain Mike Rincon returns along with six other starters, including newly elected captain Dan Holmquist, who looks to replace Sam Warton in the lineup.
