Malden opens first dog park
The city’s first dog park was opened at Trafton Park as part of a
larger improvement project, a Malden development official said Tuesday.
The
12,600 square-foot park occupies about a quarter of the park’s land,
and cost $38,000 to build as part of a quarter-million dollar project
funded by federal money, said Deborah Burke, Malden's project director for
economic development, in an e-mail message.
The cash to fund the
multiphase project came from community development block grants
provided by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Burke
said. The grants are administered by the Malden Redevelopment Authority
on behalf of the city, she said.
Burke said the park was requested by City Councilor Neil Kinnon, in
whose Ward 6 the park is situated in the Maplewood section of Malden.
“The dog park is located in an area of the park that was underutilized for as long as the councilor can remember,” Burke said in the statement.
The idea of creating a dog park came from Maplewood resident Heidi Barrazza, who owns Dogwood Cottage, a hotel and spa for canines, in Melrose, Burke said. Barrazza approached Kinnon with the idea, Burke said.
