The City of Malden has spent more than four times what it budgeted this year for snow removal, the mayor said.

The city has paid for more than $800,000 worth of plowing, salting, sanding, and hauling, said Mayor Richard C. Howard in a phone interview. Howard said $200,000 was set aside this year for storm response.

"It will be a significant shortfall for the year," he said. "How we deal with it will really depend on our assets at the end of the year."

More than 70 inches of snow have fallen on Greater Boston, according to a recent tally.
