Mural4.jpgA community painting day to help complete Malden's first mural has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 22, an organizer said.

From 2-5 p.m., anyone is invited to join the student volunteers and others to complete the work. No experience or equipment is necessary, only a desire to paint, organizers said.

The community painting day was originally scheduled for May 15 but canceled because of rain.

The 70-foot by 20-foot expanse of concrete, located under the Orange Line overpass on Route 60, will be adorned with imagery recalling Malden's past and notions of the future. Local teens played a large role is formulating the final design, and are also principal painters during weekly after school sessions.

The mural project was three years in the making, said Tova Speter, program manager for The Art Connection, a Boston nonprofit that teamed with the city to execute the mural. Work began May 2 after funding woes delayed the start.

The project is expected to be complete by June 6, Speter said.
