I hope you are staying cool! Mayor Howard announced that residents seeking relief from the extreme heat may go to the Senior Community Center at 7 Washington Street Thursday, July 21st between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Please take precautions during this hot weather!
 
Now here is the latest from around the neighborhood and city:
 
UPCOMING CITYWIDE EVENTS

* The Second Annual Antique, Hot Rod, Truck and Muscle Car Auto Show will be held on Sunday, July 24th from 9 a.m. -3 p.m. at Plaza 88 located at 185 Commercial Street and Anthony's of Malden, 105 Canal Street. For more information, please visit  www.maldenchamber.org.
 
* The Dockside Restaurant Block Party will be held on Saturday, August 6th beginning at 11 a.m. at 229 Centre Street. All proceeds raised will go to Housing Families.
 
* The Second Annual Arts in the Park event will be held on Saturday, August 13th from 4-7 p.m. at Bell Rock Memorial Park. There will be arts and crafts tables with items for purchase and live performances throughout the event, including Bucket of Blues. * The American Red Cross will be sponsoring a Blood Drive on Monday, August 15th from 2-7 p.m. at the Malden Elks, 37 Florence Street.

* The next DPW Recycling Day will be held on Saturday, August 20th from 9 a.m. -2 p.m. at 356 Commercial Street. For more information, please call 781-397-7160.
 
* The Annual Kiwanis Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, August 20th from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Devir Park. There will be games and lots of food.
 
* A second Teen Night will be held on Saturday, August 20th from 7-11 p.m. at the Malden YMCA (Mountain Avenue entrance). Sponsored by the YMCA, YWCA, Partnership for Community Schools, and Committee of Committed Citizens, the event is open to all Malden teens entering 9-12th grade. A school ID or report card is required. There will be music, basketball, ice cream, pizza, and free raffles. This comes on the heels of the first event which brought in close to 100 teens!
 
* The Malden Democratic City Committee Annual BBQ will be held at Anthony's, 105 Canal Street on Thursday, August 25th from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Tickets are only $5!
 
* There will be a benefit for Larry Gilligan, who was diagnosed with ALS, on Saturday, August 27th beginning at 7 p.m. at the Malden Moose, 562 Broadway. Tickets are $35 and more information can be found on Facebook.
       
CITY COUNCIL NEWS

The City Council is in recess for the summer. We passed the budget on time and met shortly thereafter to vote on year-end transfers. I will let you know if there are any other meetings scheduled for the summer. Otherwise, we will return on Tuesday, September 6th ... We continue to await state action on home rule petitions voted this session, including increasing the Residential Tax Exemption from 20 to 30 percent; amending our city charter; and restructuring our finance office to add Chief Financial Officer. I will keep you updated on the progress of these bills ... The Council voted unanimously to support an Urban Renewal Plan study for the parcel bound by Commercial, Route 60, Charles and Canal streets. Public hearings will ensue in the fall once the results come back to us.
 
We received notice that Malden was awarded a little over $2 million to restore laid off firefighter positions via the SAFER grant. There is no required match and no requirement to fund the positions beyond the life of the grant, which was a concern with previous grant applications. The Mayor has indicated that he will be working to restore the positions that were laid off in 2010 ... The Council is continuing to review the issues associated with a potential residential permit parking program. With the vacation period upon us, we will wait until our return in September before taking any further action. In the meantime, please continue to email your comments to cityclerk@cityofmalden.org ... The Malden Police Department is hiring three police cadets and applications are due July 27th. I attended the most recent Residential Employment Monitoring Committee meeting and they continue to make progress. Since last report, about 35 percent of the work for the Malden High School renovation is being done by Malden residents ... Mayor Howard's committee to look at long-range plan to address the closing of the Maplewood Fire Station continues and sites are being explored ... Construction to expand the downtown parking lot behind the Senior Center started Wednesday. There will also be a kiosk and validated parking for extended time in the lot. Yard waste will be picked up bi-weekly for July and August. For more information, please contact the DPW at 781-397-7160 ... Congratulations to the Mystic River Rugby Club for defeating the Gordonian Rugby Football Club who are on tour from Scotland ... Congratulations are also in order for Jeanne Benoit on her appointment as Interim Director for the Senior Center. She is replacing Christine DiPietro, who served the center admirably for many years ... A new Facebook page has been created by the Malden High School Alumni Association in an effort to reach out to alumni with news and events. Please forward to your Malden High contacts ... The Planning Board hearing on the redevelopment of the former Super Fitness has been tabled until after Labor Day. The traffic study required for the project was recently submitted and is being reviewed by city officials ... Congratulations to everyone involved with the Malden Mural located on Route 60 near the T. What an addition to the city!
 
Congratulations to Jim Follis of Malden on his election as Commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) for Massachusetts ... FOX25 Morning News Zip Trip is coming to Malden on Friday, August 26th. Details to follow ... Malden's Summer Concert Series will continue on Wednesday, August 17th from 6-8 p.m. at City Hall Plaza ... The Annual Saint  Rocco's Feast will be held August 12th through the 15th along Pearl Street ... Malden Reads Kick Off will be held on Monday, July 25th from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Library ... Congratulations to Verdone's Pizzeria on their 40th anniversary of doing business in Malden ... Congratulations also go out to Malden's own Marty Cahill for making the Major League Lacrosse All-Star team ... Condolences to the Gallagher family on the passing of Mary Gallagher who worked for the Assessor's Office for many years.


WARD 1 NEWS


The Second Annual Summer Jam Basketball League is underway at Green Street Park. All games are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and the playoffs start August 16th ... One of our neighbors asked that I suggest anyone having packages delivered to pay the extra charge requiring packages be signed for when delivered as there were a few allegedly taken in the High Street area ... On behalf of Peg Crowe, I want to thank Dave Russo, Dockside Riverview and other local businesses, Carol Ann Desiderio and all the volunteers for a great July 4th weekend! Also, congratulations to all the winners of the day including our Bicycle Parade Winner, Sean Hudson; Little Miss Ward 1, Aliyah Baker; Little Mr. Ward 1, Connor Johnson; and Most Patriotic, Isabella Pizziferri ... Congratulations to Rick Boudreau who is the Master Elect of Converse Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Malden ... The Board of Appeal will be meeting on Thursday, July 21st at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, Third Floor to consider the petition of 55-57 Ashland Street's use of their home as a three-family as opposed to a two-family home ... The Mayor's Housing Task Force inspects problem residential and commercial properties throughout the community in an effort to eliminate blight in the neighborhoods. Ward 1 locations that are on the Mayor's Housing Task Force list as of July 12th are as follows: 55-57 Ashland Street, 4 Brown Terrace, 163 Ferry Street, 26 Judson Street, 161-163 Madison Street, and 49 Walnut Street. Recent Ward 1 foreclosures are as follows: 112-114 Medford Street.
