The Malden High School golf team faced Cambridge Rindge & Latin last Tuesday at Unicorn Golf course in Stoneham and defeated Cambridge for the first time in over a decade, 48.5-23.5.
Malden finished with a 4-4-1 record and qualified for the Division 1 North State Tournament Sectional Qualifier to be held Oct. 24 at the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club.
During the prior week, perhaps Malden’s best in 20 years, the Tornadoes won the team championship at the GBL Tournament at Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover. Senior Matteo Pocobene became the GBL individual champion. The Malden team included freshmen Tristar To and Piero Pocobene. In addition, Malden defeated rivals Somerville and Everett by convincing margins in team play.
“This team is the grittiest team that I have ever coached,” stated Coach Rick Malatesta. “They have overcome a lot of adversity and disappointment this year. This is not, from top to bottom, the most talented team that I have had ... that would be last year's team ... but it is the most determined.
"We have a captain-leader in Matteo Pocobene, who is our best golfer. Assistant Captain Dan Glynn is a stabilizing force on the team. We have two freshmen, Tristar To and Piero Pocobene, who will be stars in this league. We have a tough-minded contingent of sophomores (Nick Ward and Philip Glynn) and a junior (Chris Acres) and we have a golfer on the team who had never played golf until this year (John Hastings) and is still winning matches. I am proud and honored to be their coach.”
Malden finished the season 4-3-1 in GBL matches, 4-4-1 overall.
The members of the Malden High School golf team are Matteo and Piero Pocobene, Tristar To, Daniel and Philip Glynn, Nick Ward, John Hastings, Chris Acres, TJ Ruddock, Derek Mauriello, John Cagno, and Devin Fitzpatrick.
