MALDEN, MA (October 14, 2011) –  Ten Malden Catholic students recently attended the Harvard Trial Advocacy Workshop sponsored by Harvard Law School.  The students served as jurors during a mock trial conducted by second and third year Harvard Law students.

Students who participated in the program were selected from students on the Malden Catholic Mock Trial Team.  They include:

Berner, Michael -- Reading
D’Errico, Jack -- Melrose
Loycano, Chris -- Melrose
Loycano, Michael -- Melrose
Ouellette, Joshua -- Malden
Pioppi, Joshua -- Winthrop
Senier, Brian -- Melrose
Silveira, John -- Woburn
Sparages, Chris -- Saugus
Verrengia, Joshua -- Revere

“The boys were jurors in a criminal case in which the defendant was accused of murdering two people in the first degree,” explained Br. Timothy Hoey, CFX, Malden Catholic faculty member and Mock Trial moderator.   “The case took about three hours to be argued.  The judge in the case was a real judge—Judge Jackson from Washington, D.C.  In their deliberations, the jurors elected Michael Berner as their foreperson.  After discussing the case and satisfying their questions, the jury voted unanimously to find the defendant not guilty.”

The Harvard Trial Advocacy Workshop took place in the John Adams Courthouse in Boston, the home of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
