The development group seeking to build a 6,500-seat minor league baseball stadium in downtown Malden will for the first time air their plan publicly next week, the city said. The meeting, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 at the Malden City Council chambers, will be the first peek for residents who for years have complained about the city's flagging downtown district.
The meeting will also be the first major outing as mayor for Gary Christenson, inaugurated Monday, who won a landslide election in November, partly on promises to revitalize the downtown, demolish City Hall, and reconnect Pleasant Street.
"I am proud that the City of Malden is being considered for such a major project and am looking forward to the presentation to hear what is being proposed and how it improves the quality of life here in Malden," Christenson said in a statement.
The $45 million project will be modeled after Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri, voted America's best minor league ball park in 2005, the city said.
The stadium would host an Atlantic League team, in which about 40 percent of the players are former or future major leaguers.
