Familiar names among new Malden firefighter hires

The city's 10 new fire recruiters have familiar names in Malden.

Thomas Walsh III is the son of Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Walsh. Richard Angelo is the son of Deputy Fire Chief Robert Angelo and the brother of firefighter Michael Angelo.  

Nicholas Hooper is the grandson of retired firefighter George Hooper. Stephen Wishoski is the son of Malden Redevelopment Authority director Stephen Wishoski.

The new class also includes two women, Kathryn Collins and Candice I. Margan,boosting the number of women to three in the department.

Other new hires are Brendan Cogavin, Timothy K. Robblee, Robert Ryan Jr., and Joseph Walklett.

The new positions are funded with a federal SAFER grant -- an acronym for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Security and Response  -- from the US Department of Homeland Security.

The force now has a total of 112 firefighters, Chief Michael Murphy said.
