The Malden Finance Committee will consider a proposal by Mayor Gary Christenson to hire four new police officers and one cadet when it meets March 13, a city councilor said.

The agenda item was announced by Ward 1 Councilor Peg Crowe in a newsletter to constituents.

The proposal by the mayor, submitted last week, comes after Christenson made a campaign commitment to bolster the police ranks during his run for mayor last year.

If approved, the officers could be on the job by April 1, Christenson has said. Because they would be hired before the start of the new budget year in July, the City Council must approve an appropriation estimated at $60,000 to pay for the hires from April until June 30.

One of the officers would be dedicated to the downtown area and the Malden Center T station, the mayor said.
