The following was submitted by Malden High publicity director Paul Famiglietti:

The Malden High boys' lacrosse team lost its season opener March 30 against Salem, 17-2.

“The Salem team is well coached and their players are skilled athletes who are able to control play at both ends of the field," commented Malden coach Brenden Maney. “Our two goals were scored by senior captain Dan Glynn and junior Paul Kiernan. Our defense struggled throughout the entire game and could not contain Salem’s potent attack.”

In an overtime decision, Malden defeated GBL rival Cambridge Rindge & Latin, 16-15, on  April 2. First-half goals were scored by Dan Glynn, Cruz Desrochers, Christian Catricala, Stanley Chan, and Nate Urban, putting the Tornadoes up, 10-6, at the half.

“Captain Dan Glynn provided leadership for the offense on the field while captain Dan Bardales led the in-close defenders,” said Coach Maney. “The defense acted as a more cohesive unit during the game against the Falcons.”

At the beginning of the second half, Cambridge scored five goals to take the lead by 1. Trading goals back and forth, Cambridge led by 1 with three minutes remaining in the game. Senior Stanley Chan scored what would have been the tying goal only to have it disallowed due to an illegal stick violation. Playing one man short, Dimas Bardales cleared the ball, feeding it to Dan Glynn, who cut to the cage, scoring for Malden with 30 seconds on the clock.

Going into overtime, still one man short, Dimas Bardales scooped up a ground ball and raced down the field. Unable to find an attacker to pass to, Dimas went in against the Falcon goalie to score the overtime winner. Winning goalie for the Tornadoes was junior TJ Ruddock.

On April 5, Malden lost to Bedford, 16-5, at Pine Banks.

“We knew that Bedford would be a tough team to beat,” said Coach Maney. “Bedford was coming off a tournament run from last season, although they’ve been struggling this season and has two losses.”

Bedford led by one at the end of the first quarter with play evenly balanced by each team on both ends of the field. “TJ [Ruddock] had 16 saves and our team’s defense kept making stops and putting the ball on the ground, but could not clear the ball often enough," said Maney. "You can’t give a good team like Bedford that many opportunities without it costing you in the end.”

During the second half, Malden continued to struggle with the transitioning of the ball from defense to offense and eventually the scoring opportunities that Bedford kept getting resulted in goals.

“The boys played hard the entire game but were unable to cut into the lead,” said Maney. “The team saw growth in many areas since their first game against Salem but they know that they have much work to do before they will be satisfied with the results."

Malden plays at North Reading Saturday. Game time is 11 a.m.
