Suspicious jars found in Malden prove non-explosive
State and local safety personnel Friday cordoned off a wooded hilltop in Malden while a State Police bomb squad disposed of suspicious materials later determined to be non-explosive.
Police and firefighters from Malden descended on Waitts Mount Park about 11 a.m., after a tree crew working in the area reported the suspicious items.
Malden Police Captain Thomas Swanson said the items were described to him as three jars of an unknown liquid with wires. But a representative of the state fire marshal's office said the item was a cardboard box with unidentified material inside.
"The park was closed off," Swanson said in a phone interview. "Other than that there was no need for an evacuation."
The bomb squad performed a controlled burn of the unknown substances, which were later determined not to be explosive, at the Foresdale Cemetery in Malden, said Jennifer Mieth, spokeswoman for state fire marshal Steve Coan. The materials were sent to a lab to determine the contents.
