Mayor Gary Christenson Thursday publicly threw his support behind Democrat Elizabeth Warren during a campaign stop downtown by the candidate for US Senate.

Christenson and Warren toured the city's downtown construction zone -- currently in the throes of a streetscape revamp funded by federal grants -- and spoke with residents and others at the Malden Senior Center on Washington Street.

"Elizabeth Warren has made clear she stands with Massachusetts' cities and towns by investing in our infrastructure such as roads and bridges and working to prevent foreclosures," Christenson said in a statement. "Her philosophy will ensure that people in Malden and cities across the Commonwealth have a fair shot at success."

In between mingling with supporters and working the crowd, Warren made her pitch for the voters of Malden to send her to Washington.

"Cities like Malden have to be the ones that take the initiative," she said, speaking in the Senior Center lobby. "You need a mayor like this who says, 'I have the vision, I'm jumping in, here's my plan.'

"When you've got a city that's ready, when its got a plan, when its on the move and wants to make investments in its citizens, the partner in Washington can help make that happen."

Warren, the presumptive Democratic nominee to the Senate, will face Republican Incumbent Scott Brown in the general election Nov. 6.
