Malden Mayor Gary Christenson joined members and supporters of the Bike to the Sea project at the opening of the Malden portion of the trail. When completed, the community path is expected to stretch from Route 16 in Everett to the waterfront in Lynn.

Malden Mayor Gary Christenson celebrated the opening of a portion of the Northern Strand Community Trail, the first completed portion in Malden of the Bike to the Sea project.

When completed, the 9-mile trail will stretch from near Route 16 in Everett, through Malden, Revere, and Saugus, before reaching the Lynn waterfront.

The trail, long anticipated by advocates but chronically under-funded, received its biggest local boost in Malden when it as included in a city borrowing plan.

After an initial $500,000 investment, the city has spent roughly $787,000 on the project so far.
