Dr. Joseph McCleary, formerly the superintendent of the Mystic Valley Charter School, has been hired to lead the Academy of Notre Dame.

Dr. Joseph McCleary, the former superintendent of the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School, has been hired by the Academy of Notre Dame in Tyngsboro, the school announced.

Under McCleary's tenure at Mystic Valley, the charter rose to prominence in national rankings, garnering high marks from Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and the Washington Post. He also restructured the college guidance and information technology departments.

"I'm delighted to be coming on board as President of this venerable institution," McCleary said in a statement. "I look forward to working with the entire school community to bring out Academy to new levels of service for our families and students."

Last year, McCleary took a year-long sabbatical, during which he helped Mystic Valley administrators prepare to reapply for the school's charter.

McCleary had previously held positions at the University of Maryland, and the Catholic University of America, where he was an English professor. He also co-founded and served as provost of a private all-boys school in Gaithersburg, Md.
