Malden Catholic athletic director and ice hockey coach Chris Serino has died, associates confirmed. He was 63.

The hockey coach who guided the Lancers to the top of the Catholic Conference, winning the Super 8 Division 1A state tournament the last two years, had been battling throat cancer.

"It's tough, he wasn't in good shape for about a month," said John McLean, who took over as Malden Catholic's hockey coach last season. "He put up a good fight."

Serino, who hailed from Saugus, was also a coach and athletic director at Merrimack College for seven years. He resigned from his position there in 2005 and immediately took over at Malden Catholic.

Serino was a three-sport Globe All-Scholastic in hockey, football, and baseball at Saugus High School.
