Police arrested a 43-year-old Malden man early Thursday after he allegedly assaulted a woman holding a baby, and then took off on foot into the night with the infant.

Malden police said that Bradley Upham began arguing with a woman at his 1202 Salem St. home after 1 a.m. Thursday, and that the confrontation became physical, said Lieutenant Joseph Pontbriand, in a phone interview.

When officers arrived they found a distraught woman who said that Upham had been drinking all day. She said she was holding the infant when Upham put his hands around her throat and pushed her to the ground. He then fled into the night with the child.

Officers investigating discovered that the woman had a sister who lived on nearby Coleman Street. When they knocked on the door, officers found the child safely in the care of the family member.

"When they went to the house on Coleman street, the baby was in good condition," said Pontbriand. It was unclear what relationship the man had to the woman, and to the baby.

Police arrested Upham a short time later, and charged him with domestic assault and battery. He was slated to be arraigned Thursday in Malden District Court.
