More than 400 pieces of graffiti have been removed from public spaces in the two and a half months since Malden purchased high-powered spray paint removal and sidewalk scrubbing equipment, according to an announcement from the city.

The city bought a hot water cleaning system with an attachment to buff sidewalks for $9,353 on Aug. 29, and it has been operated by the Department of Public Works since, city spokesperson Kathleen Manning Hall said. The city previously used a contractor to remove graffiti.

"Removing graffiti immediately is an effective deterrent to the reoccurrence of the offense," Mayor Gary Christenson said in a statement. "This is one way we can make Malden residents feel good about their neighborhoods and the city."
