Mayor Gary Christenson and members of Bike to the Sea celebrate the opening of the path in Malden.

A 3.1 mile path along the old Boston and Maine railroad bed in Malden is now open to bicyclists and pedestrians.

A ribbon cutting for the path, known as the Bike to the Sea path, or Northern Strand Community Trail, was held Dec. 1 in Linden Square.

The trail in Malden is part of plan to create a 10-mile path that will stretch from Everett to the Lynn waterfront. Bike to the Sea, a Malden-based nonprofit, has coordinated and supported efforts to create the path.
