An eighth-grader was arrested Friday morning in Malden for allegedly bringing a double edged knife to school, police said.

The male student was arrested about 9:30 a.m. at Salemwood School on a charge of possession of a dangerous weapon, Malden Police Lieutenant Marc Gatcomb said.  The arrest was made quickly and the school continued regular operations during the incident and through the day, Gatcomb said.

"At no time was the safety of any students compromised." he said. "There was no lockdown or anything like that. We never thought there were any other measures we needed to take."

Gatcomb declined to comment on how the knife was discovered or any other circumstances leading to the arrest. The student will face the charge in juvenile court, he said.
