A Malden man was sentenced to up to 20 years in prison Thursday for fatally stabbing his husband in 2011, according to authorities.

Michael Losee, 42, of Malden appeared in Middlesex County Superior Court Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and was handed a sentence of 19 to 20 years in state prison by Judge Thomas Billings, according to a statement from Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone's office.

The charges stem from the death of Brian Bergeron, 55, also of Malden, who was found stabbed to death in the couple's home at 32 Clarendon St. about 10:30 a.m. on March 9, 2011.

Losee confessed to having killed Bergeron in a phone call to a friend in Florida shortly after the stabbing, the statement said. The friend notified police and Losee turned himself in later in the day on March 9.

“This defendant has now admitted and taken responsibility for his role in a troubling episode of domestic violence which resulted in the death of his spouse,” Leone said in a prepared statement. “Domestic violence is not about gender, it is about power and control, and our office will continue to work with our partners in the community in an effort to prevent tragic domestic violence incidents, such as this, from occurring while also serving and protecting victims.”
