Firebrand Concert Series returns to Malden for its fourth performance this season, a program of Joseph Haydn’s “Gypsy” trio XV:28 and AntonínDvořák’s “Dumky” trio. Violinist Julia Hunter will join cellist Diana Golden and pianist Yelena Beriyeva as the ensemble explores what the “Gypsy” and “Dumky” folk tunes of Haydn and Dvořák have in common with modern day wanderers, captives and Bohemians.
In writing the “Dumky” trio, Dvořák put to music the epic ballads of captive Slavs. The soulful laments sung passionately by the violin, cello and piano have made this one of the most beloved masterpieces of the classical canon. Haydn’s “Gypsy” trio is also based on folk tunes of wanderers in Bohemia, but the upbeat tempo of the final presto highlights a more spirited, playful mood than the “Dumky” trio. Forthe Hungarian Rondo in the final movement of Haydn’s “Gypsy” trio, Haydn borrowed his melody from gypsy musicians, who played the theme to help Austrian army officials attract peasants to their recruiting posts. Haydn wrote several dozen piano trios, but the “Gypsy” trio stands out as one of Haydn’s most popular trios.
