Over $20,000 in grants have been awarded to Malden programs through the city's cultural council, according to an announcement.
Among the 22 grant recipients were the Malden Reads program, Shakespeare in the Park and Housing Families, according to the announcement.
Each year, the council's board, which is made up of volunteers, reviews grant proposals and selects recipients for the funds. In all, $21,690 in grant funding was handed out in 2013.
"It's the devotion of our Cultural Council volunteers who really make this program work," Gary Christenson said in a statement. "They make limited resources go as far as possible, and they make the tough decisions about which projects should be supported."
Malden's council is part of a statewide network of 329 cultural councils that distribute state grants at the local level. The city will begin accepting applications for grants again in the fall. Information can be found at massculturalcouncil.org.
