State Senator Katherine Clark has been appointed as the chairwomen on the Joint Judiciary Committee, along with leadership appointments on three other panels, according to an announcement.

10142010_14norace_photo2-7739723.jpgClark, a former prosecutor, recently proposed changes that would allow more sex offender registry information to be made public, a topic that will be under review by the committee, she said in a statement. The committee reviews legislation relating to crimes, penalties, sentencing, and the court system.

"I am honored to receive this appointment," Clark said in a statement. "The Judiciary Committee will tackle a number of important issues during this session, including sex offender registry reform, civil rights, gun trafficking, and our juvenile justice system. These issues directly affect our communities and improve our public safety, and we are moving forward to address them."

Elected to her second consecutive term last year, Clark previously served as Senate chair of the Joint Committee on Revenue.

She also was selected as chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Steering and Policy; vice chairwoman of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse; and vice chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Post Audit and Oversight. The appointments were announced Jan. 31.

Clark, a Democrat from Melrose, represents Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, and Winchester.
