Malden City Councilor at-large Greg Lucey will not seek reelection this year, he said in a phone interview Thursday.

"I'm not going away, I just thought this would be a good time to start balancing things," he said. "A lot of the time political stuff gets more weighted than other things in life."

Lucey, president of Malden-based Lucey Insurance Agency, is in his third term as a councilor, having previously served three terms on the Malden School Committee. He said he chose to announce his decision not to run well ahead of the election to give time for candidates to campaign.

"I could have waited, but I didn't want to wait until the end, because to run citywide you need to organize if you want to be a serious candidate," he said. "I think there have been some very good candidates out there in the past that have elected not to run because they didn't have enough time."

Lucey didn't rule out running for political office in the future -- "Never say never," he said -- and said he would consider "helping out" in a campaign for his seat, if the right candidate chose to run.

Scott Saia, a Malden resident who coordinated the Home for the Holidays street hockey tournament, has announced his candidacy for Lucey's seat.
