A man suspected of committing two armed robberies at ATM machines last month was arrested in Malden after a civilian recognized him on the street from photos distributed after the robberies, Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis said.

Jason M. Mahoney, 34, of Malden was walking along Eastern Avenue about 7 a.m. on June 9 wearing the same clothes and matching the description of the suspect in gunpoint robberies near Bank of America ATMs on May 26 in Malden and May 29 in Medford, Molis said.

He was spotted by an off-duty Massachusetts General Hospital police officer, who recognized him from photos distributed after the robberies, Molis said. The man called police and waited there until Officer John Byrne arrived.

After speaking to Mahoney, Byrne frisked him and felt a pistol inside his jacket pocket, Molis said. After being ordered to the ground, Mahoney tried to flee the scene, Molis said. The witness who first called police had remained in the area, and helped bring Mahoney back into custody, Molis said.

"From my standpoint, this was a great, great piece of police work, and it was the end result of having an informed citizen who chose to get involved," Molis said.

Mahoney faces charges of resisting arrest, armed robbery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
