The following was submitted by the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School:

Mystic Valley Regional Charter School students, Brian Lai and Connie Lam, served as delegates in the YMCA’s National Youth in Government Program this summer.  They joined with students from forty different states for a week in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to debate current topics of national government.

The issues discussed varied from the international: should there be forced peace talks between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples to the domestic: should there be “required volunteer” work for individuals receiving unemployment benefits.  The students were able to develop their leadership and speaking skills while debating these and other issues with their fellow delegates.

Brian was very happy to be able to participate in the program which he felt developed his sense of patriotism and love for democracy. Connie was able to develop her public speaking skills and was named as the Committee Clerk representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Brian is a junior who lives in Melrose with his parents and his sister who is a Mystic Valley grad. Connie is a senior from Malden who lives with her parents and her brother Calvin who is in the first grade at Mystic Valley.
