The Mystic Valley 7th and 8th Grade Girls' Basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season after beating both Swampscott and Masco over the holiday break. On Saturday, the Eagles beat Swampscott 42-11. The high flying Eagles were led in scoring by 7th grader Sophia Mercurio who had 13 points and 8th grader Brianna Paris with 6 points.

Rounding out the scoring were Hannah DiGiovanni, Tara Foley, Talia Mamayek, and Michela Correale who had 4 points apiece and Leah Bissex, Petrina Alesy, and Anastasia Bessler with 2 points each. Rachel Wronski also contributed with 1 point. Coach Brown was very pleased with how the Eagles played defensively.

"I thought we did a great job of boxing out and rebounding, something that we spent all week working on," he said after the game. "Our defense did a great job of holding Swampscott to only 3 second half points and we were able to capitalize on a lot of transition buckets."

Sunday proved to be a much tougher match for Mystic Valley but the Eagles were able to hold on for a 20-14 win over Masco. A strong Masco team jumped out to an 11-4 lead at the half as the Eagles were being outplayed in every aspect of the game. After a few halftime adjustments, Mystic Valley came out on an 8-0 run and didn't trail for the rest of the game.

"I think we were a little too wild and sloppy in the first half," said Coach Brown. "I told the girls that in order to win, we would need to excel at the basics: defense, rebounding, making good passes, and hitting our lay-ups."

The Eagles were led in scoring by Anastasia Bessler, 6 points, Michela Correale, 4 points, Hannah DiGiovanni and Brianna Paris with 3 points each, and Rachel Wronski and Talia Mamayek with 2 points apiece.

The Eagles' come from behind win pushed them to 3-0 on the season. The Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 4th, when they host Ipswich at 10:15 at home.
