The following was submitted by The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School:

The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School Swim Team opened its 2013-2014 campaign by swimming to victory over Greater Lawrence Tech and Shawsheen, two in-league CAC opponents.

On December 18, the Eagles, led by two first place finishes in individual events by sophomore Christian Kinnon, defeated Shawsheen in an away meet. In the team’s first home meet on December 20, the Mystic Valley swimmers improved to 2-0 behind the efforts sophomore Damir Durakovic and Kinnon, who won two individual events each.

The Mystic Valley relay teams also won each of the six contested events over the course of the two meets, setting the stage for appearances at state championship meets in February. The boys’ 200 freestyle relay team of Robbie Cummings (junior), Kinnon, Ben Lieu (senior), and Nick Antonucci (junior) qualified for Sectionals against Shawsheen. The girls’ team of Caroline Williams (sophomore), Maggie Finn (eighth grade), Elizabeth Callahan (sophomore), and Emily Williams (senior) qualified for Sectionals and States.

The girls’ and boys’ teams also qualified Sectionals or States in the 400 freestyle relay. The boys’ team (Antonucci, Lieu, Cummings, and Durakovic) qualified for Sectionals, while the girls’ team (C. Williams, Callahan, Maaya Alagappan, and E. Williams) qualified for both Sectionals and States. Girls’ and boys’ teams had previously qualified for the 200 medley relay.

Several of the Eagles swimmers also qualified to swim individual events at Sectionals and States. Christian Kinnon qualified in each of his two individual events against Shawsheen, the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. He also qualified in the 200 individual medley against Greater Lawrence Tech. Kinnon, who took fifth place in the state in this event last year, will look to improve on his personal best time of 1:02.22 this season. Nick Antonucci also qualified in the 100 breaststroke, an event in which he took eighth in the state last season.

There were many other standout performances between the two meets, including a myriad of personal best times:

Robbie Cummings (200 freestyle), Kenny Antonucci (100 freestyle and 200 freestyle), Ryan Kinnon (50 and 100 freestyle), Vikram Alagappan (100 backstroke and 100 freestyle), Damir Durakovic (100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and 200 freestyle), Elizabeth Callahan (200 freestyle), Michael Leung (200 individual medley and 100 freestyle), Nick Antonucci (50 freestyle), Sofia Antonucci (50 freestyle), Christian Kinnon (100 backstroke), Bridget Tully (100 backstroke), and Fayrouz Farhane (100 backstroke).
