The Mystic Valley 5&6th grade girls’ basketball team won the North Shore Travel League Tournament for the third straight year winning the championship game Saturday night against Newburyport 30-18. Newburyport was held to only 10 points from the floor by the stifling Eagles defense which controlled the game from start to finish.
Mystic Valley was led on offense by the strong play of Lauren Carlino (10), and Kate Story (5) who scored half of the Eagles’ points while controlling the ball from the guard position. Camryn Ryan had a strong game scoring her 3rd 3 pointer of the playoffs. Mystic Valley had 10 girls in the scoring column: Ashley O’Rourke and Saige Brutus 2, Isabel Ospina , Emily Zibell and Deirdre Flanagan each scored 1 point. Daniella Weldon played her strongest game of the season scoring 3 points and hustling and diving for every loose ball. Saige Brutus, Jaden Granderson and Mary Eileen d’Entremont played lock down defense on the Newburyport point guard. The pressure that put on her caused her to foul out of the game early in the second half.
After the game, Eagles coach, Jane Brunelli, had much to say about her players: “Natalie Lorusso, played solid minutes at guard giving Lauren Carlino a nice breather. Madison Sullivan continued to play well with the ball in her hands. Madison has a great sense of the game and can read the court well. Heather DiGiovanni was again relentless on the boards at both ends of the court and always looking for the open teammate. Daniela D’Alleva, plays at top speed all game long, she hustles and finds the open girl on defense every time. She also scored the last basket of the season with a running jump shot.”
The girls added to the Eagles’ unbeaten playoff runs in their last two championships seasons by going 3-0 making it 10 wins no loses in the playoffs. The girls are undefeated in 2014 having gone on a tear winning 16 in a row to close out the year. Their last loss was on December 22, 2013. They averaged 33 points per game while only allowing 17 points per game.
The team was helped along to victory Saturday by a big crowd of Mystic Valley supporters. The support led Coach Brunelli to state after the game: “Thanks to all those that came out (especially Mrs. Mullen for her support throughout the season) for cheering us on Saturday. Bryanna Cimeti and Bailey Chiccuarelli have been a cornerstone of the 5&6th grade girls team for the past 3 seasons. They handle our scorebook and run the clock. They travel to our away games and I appreciate their dedication to the team.
A special thanks to all the parents for allowing me to be a small part of their daughters’ time at Mystic Valley. We also had a strong student section and our former champions made posters and came to cheer the team on. I would like to thank my assistant coach, Mike Bessler, for helping me this season. Jess Phinney was a big help as well during tryouts and many nights staying after her practice to help us with practice. Varsity coach Jason Cantwell was also a constant positive presence throughout the season. The family atmosphere at Mystic Valley is constantly present but to feel it during a 5&6th grade basketball game is truly a wonderful experience”.
